Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for You, Baby & Your Partner
Share
Short answer: pack your hospital bag by around 36 weeks into three parts — one for you (labour + recovery), one for the baby (going-home basics), and one for your partner. Keep it by the door. You need far less than the lists online suggest; comfort items and going-home clothes matter most.
I over-packed a suitcase for a two-night stay and used maybe a third of it. Here's the honest, three-part version that covers everything without the panic-buying.
When should I pack my hospital bag?
Have it ready by 36 weeks — babies don't read calendars. Pack it, then keep a short "grab list" on top for the last few things (phone charger, snacks) that live elsewhere until the day. Leave it somewhere you can grab one-handed on the way out.
For you (labour & recovery)
- Your maternity notes / documents and birth plan
- Comfortable, high-waisted going-home clothes and cosy socks
- Toiletries, lip balm, hair tie, and anything that helps you relax
- Phone + a long charger cable (hospital sockets are never close)
- Snacks and a water bottle
- A few soft muslins — endlessly useful for you and the baby
For the baby (keep it simple)
- 2–3 sleepsuits and vests in newborn and 0–3 months (you won't know the size yet)
- A going-home outfit and a warm layer or blanket
- Nappies for newborns and fragrance-free wipes or cotton wool
- A soft hat and scratch mitts
- A hooded towel or wrap towel for keeping them warm
- An approved car seat (fitted and ready in the car) for the journey home — buy from a certified retailer and follow the fitting guidance
For your partner
- A change of clothes and toiletries (stays can run long)
- Snacks, change/card for parking and machines, and their own charger
- A pillow — hospital chairs are unkind
The going-home bag
Keep one small, organised bag you actually leave with — your first "out and about" run. A structured changing bag that you pack the same way every time makes the drive home and the first days far calmer. If you want to feed on the way or once home with visitors around, a nursing cover is a nice option to have.
What can I leave at home?
- A full week's wardrobe — you'll likely stay a night or two.
- Newborn shoes, big toys, and "just in case" gadgets.
- Anything valuable you'd hate to lose in a busy ward.
Frequently asked questions
When should I have my hospital bag ready?
Aim for around 36 weeks of pregnancy so it's done well before your due date. Keep it by the door with a short list on top for the last-minute items like your phone charger and snacks.
What do first-time parents most often forget?
A long phone charger cable, going-home clothes for mum in a comfortable size, snacks, and coins or a card for parking. The baby items are usually remembered — it's the parent comfort items that get missed.
How many baby outfits should I pack for the hospital?
Two or three sleepsuits and vests, in both newborn and 0–3 month sizes since you won't know the fit yet, plus a going-home outfit and a warm layer. That's plenty for a typical stay.
